Lunar Observatory Simulator

The Lunar Observatory Simulator explores how the Moon’s appearance changes throughout its 29.53-day synodic cycle. The main orbital view shows synchronized Sun–Earth–Moon geometry, while a separate close lunar view displays the phase seen from Earth. A Solar System context inset and live information panels help connect the Moon’s visible phase with its position relative to Earth and the Sun.

The simulator includes all eight major lunar phases, controls for lunar day and animation speed, sunlight-direction and orbital-inclination guides, and several appearance modes. These include the natural Moon, blood moon, copper eclipse, orange horizon Moon, golden Moon, and a rare blue-tinted appearance. Appearance modes change the Moon’s visual conditions without changing its orbital phase.

Object sizes and orbital distances are intentionally enlarged so the geometry is easy to study. The simulation focuses on phase lighting and the relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon rather than representing the Solar System at true physical scale.

How To Use

LUNAR OBSERVATORY CONTROLS
Let the lunar cycle animate automatically or pause it and explore a specific lunar day. Compare the orbital geometry with the close Moon view to see why each phase appears the way it does from Earth.
ControlSettingWhat It Does
AnimationPLAY / PAUSEStarts or pauses the Moon’s movement through the lunar cycle.
ResetRESETReturns the simulation to its starting lunar-day position.
Lunar Day0–29.53Moves directly through the synodic month and updates the Moon’s phase and geometry.
SpeedSLIDERChanges how quickly the animated lunar cycle progresses.
Major PhasesSELECTJump directly to New Moon, crescents, quarter phases, gibbous phases, or Full Moon.
Moon AppearanceSELECTChanges the Moon’s visual appearance without changing its orbital phase.
Accurate Event ModeTOGGLEDisplays reference information for the selected special Moon appearance.
Sunlight DirectionTOGGLEShows or hides the direction of incoming sunlight in the orbital view.
Orbital InclinationTOGGLEShows or hides the Moon-orbit inclination cue.
LabelsTOGGLEShows or hides explanatory labels in the simulation.
Live InformationVIEWShows phase, illumination, elongation, lunar age, sky timing, geometry, and viewing notes.
01Press Play to start the simulator, then watch the Moon move around Earth while comparing the orbital and close-up views.
02Pause the animation and move the Lunar Day slider or select a major phase to study its Sun–Earth–Moon geometry.
03Try different Moon appearances and display guides, then read the live information to understand what changes and what remains the same.
